Basic Solid Lubricant Studies II.
Abstract:
The objective of the work was to study the behavior of lubricant materials under some of the conditions encountered during lubrication, such as high pressure and temperature. A variety of solid lubricants was examined by microscopic, infrared spectrophotometric, and X-ray diffraction techniques in diamond high pressure cells at pressures up to 80 kbar and in some instances at temperatures up to 200C. The compositions included binary sulfides of antimony, arsenic, molybdenum, and tungsten and other solid lubricants such as graphite, boron nitride, borax, mica, talc, vermiculite, and stearic acid. Also studied were complex sulfides including thioantimonates or thiomolybdates of arsenic, antimony, cadmium, cerium, copper, iron, molybdenum, silver, and tungsten and mixtures of sulfides with iron powder.
