Abstract:

When a circular cylinder is immersed in a fluid of infinite extent and oscillated in such a manner that drag effects are negligible, the closed form solution gives an added mass coefficient of 1.0. However, if boundaries are placed in proximity to the cylinder, and the cylinder is oscillated parallel to the boundary, the added mass varies from the classical result, and the forces are dependent upon the boundaries as well as the frequency. The study experimentally determined the total force on such a cylinder in proximity to an impermeable bottom surface under a free surface and related this force to the added mass coefficient. A COMPUTER PROGRAM WAS USED4 AND THE RESULTS ARE PRESENTED GRAPHICALLY AS A FUNCTION OF DIMENSIONLESS PARAMETERS.
