A Disk-Operating System for the EAI 8400 Digital Computer.
Abstract:
The Electronic Associates, Incorporated model 8400 is a digital computer specifically designed for use in conjunction with analog computers for hybrid analysis and simulation work. This thesis describes work performed at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey to rewrite the operating system of software for this computer to convert it from a magnetic-tape-resident to a disk-resident system. The work includes extensive modifications to the monitor program as well as the Input-Output Control System, and provides for the use of the disk to replace the system tape, including the run-time subroutine library. In addition, modifications are described which eliminate the two work or scratch tapes normally required by the language processors by allowing the use of the disk to fulfill their functions in addition to that of the system tape. These changes are combined with a number of smaller improvements to create an operating environment which has the effect of greatly increasing the speed and operating efficiency of the system as a whole.
