The Coefficient as a Measure of Friction, and Methods of Measuring It,
Abstract:
An analysis is given of the concept of the friction coefficient as a measure of friction within the framework of different friction hypotheses. The current lack of a unique definition of the friction coefficient is noted, and the importance of introducing such a definition is emphasized. Methods of studying frictional resistance, and the requirements placed on the respective measuring equipments are reviewed, with particular reference to methods of measuring friction in the plastic working of metals.
