Design of Protective Packaging System for the RS-10 Refrigeration Unit,
Abstract:
The objective of the project was to develop a protective cushioning system for an RS-10 Refrigeration Unit, adaptable to a standard MIL-C-4150 transit case, which would protect the contents to a specified fragility level of 16 G when the system is dropped from a height of 24 inches. An additional design condition was that the pack should be of such size and weight to permit delivery through the postal system. An initial evaluation indicated that it would be impossible to provide both the size and protection requirements within the constraints imposed. Therefore, it was decided to investigate two separate approaches. One approach would result in a pack meeting the specified fragility protection level, but would not be suitable for parcel post shipment. The other approach was to immobilize a critical fragile element of the refrigeration unit, thereby effectively increasing the overall fragility level of the unit so that a smaller pack, meeting parcel post requirements could be utilized.
