Abstract:

The object of the study was to evaluate organic carbonates as components of low hygroscopic brake fluids. Propylene carbonate and glycol ether carbonates were screened as brake fluid components and subjected to tests listed in Federal Specification VV-B-680. Stability of the carbonates was determined by refluxing mixtures of the carbonates with various conventional brake fluids and their components and measuring CO2 evolution. It was concluded that none of the carbonates tested would be satisfactory brake fluid components due to their chemical instability, which could result in vapor locking of the brake system. Author
