Applications of Far Infrared Spectroscopy to the Study of the Structure and Dynamics of Organic Molecules-Alcohols.
Abstract:
The far infrared spectra of a number of alcohols have been recorded as pure samples and as very dilute solutions in cyclohexane. A characteristic band 208 plus or minus 10cm is present in the spectra of aliphatic alcohols dissolved in cyclohexane. On the basis of the deuterium shifts this band is assigned to OH torsion. This characteristic band was quite strong in the spectrum of a 1 solution of chlesterol in cyclohexane. The position of this band is nearly independent of steric effects but is very sensitive to electrostatic interactions. The literature concerned with group frequencies and rotational conformers of alcohols is discussed. Author
