Abstract:

The adsorption of partially hydrolyzed dilute polyacrylamide solutions onto broken-up natural sandstone has been investigated under static conditions and under filtration conditions. Both ammoniacal and calciferous polyacrylamide solutions were investigated. In the absence of dissolved inorganic salts, calciferous polyacrylamide is less highly absorbed when its degree of hydrolysis is increased. Presumably this is true of ammoniacal polyacrylamide also however, the samples used all contained much dissolved ammonium sulfate, which encouraged adsorption, even from extensively hydroloyzed solutions. Solutions containing 33 polyacrylamide showed substantially identical behavior under static and dynamic conditions this was not true of the 12 solutions, where too low a value was obtained under dynamic conditions. This phenomenon was attributed to a low specific surface of the sandstone used in the experiment. Author
