In-Bore Microwave Telemetry of Fuze Control Function.
Abstract:
A 152 mm HEAT MP-1 XM409E4 modified round exploded in-bore during test firings at APG in Nov. 1969. Investigation included in-bore telemetry of factors involved. These included operation of switches in the control-power supply unit and in the fuze, voltage profile of the control-power supply unit, and possible gas leakage into the fuze cavity. Seven rounds instrumented for single or multiple measurements were fired. The measurements indicate that under normal firing conditions the switch function is in accordance with design, while the voltage is comparable to the value that static tests predict. Under abnormal conditions during firing, voltage may appear on the line connecting the control-power supply unit to the fuze, while it also is possible that under special conditions there may be significant gas leakage into the fuze cavity.
