Abstract:

Internal friction mechanical damping techniques were the primary means used to study the alkali ion mobility in various glasses. Characteristic internal friction peaks have been associated with the stress induced movement of the alkali ions in glass for many years. Alkali ion mobility was also evaluated from the alkali diffusion coefficients, determined using radioactive isotopes. This provided a comparison of short range alkali ion movement internal friction with that for long range movement diffusion. The broad, general goal of this research was to learn more about the bonding of the alkali ions in the glass structure and how the environment oxygen coordination number, neighboring cations, etc. affect this bonding and, consequently, the alkali ion mobility.
