Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to present a brief review of the physics of the low temperature phenomenon, superconductivity to describe the characteristics, technology, and capabilities of electronic devices based on the unusual properties of superconductors and to indicate some of the ways in which these devices may be applied to the solution of important technological problems. The report also contains a review of the present state of the art of small refrigeration systems applicable to superconducting electronic systems, and discusses the prospects for development of superconducting materials with higher transition temperatures and critical fields. Specific recommendations are made for areas of possible Navy applications of this new electronic technology as well as areas in which further research and development seem appropriate in order to determine Navy use.
