Abstract:

Experiments on the growth of zircon ZrSiO4 were continued with molten salt and hydrothermal techniques. A flux of Li2O-2WO3 provided one of the higher dissolving capacities for zircon. Runs in 265 c.c. crucibles gave crystals of only mm dimensions. Flux inclusions, hopper growth, and colorations are typical defects. The primary difficulty of flux growth has been low solubility. About 15 more small hydrothermal runs were made to evaluate mineralizers and pressure-temperature conditions. LiF-KF combinations appear to be better than KF solutions. Higher temperatures of up to 800C promote solubility and quality of growth. Larger hydrothermal runs in 1 inch systems show growth rates of only 0.0001 inchday at 550-600C on 100 planes. Faster rates but poorer growth also occurred on seeds of alternate orientation. Author
