Abstract:

An Automatic Flight Control System AND All Weather Landing System AFCSAWLS was installed in FAAs Convair 880 aircraft N-112. The AFCSAWLS features extensive use of integrated circuits and solid state discrete components in a dual channel fail safe passive configuration. The system was tested and evaluated at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center NAFEC, Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the period from July 1967 until July 1970. During the flight rest program, system performance was evaluated in such autopilot modes as cruise, altitude hold, heading hold, and navigation capture and track. 9 Landing system performance was evaluated at NAFEC where complete test facilities were available and ILS coupled approaches were made at 15 other airports.
