Abstract:

The article deals with the need for increased penetration and resolution of optical telescopes for research in modern astrophysics and the trend toward reflecting telescopes with prodded the construction of a special astrophysics observatory SAO with a 6-meter telescope mirror under the auspices of the U.S.S.R. Academy of Sciences. Parametric limits are surveyed from the standpoint of the 6-meter mirror as a maximum practicality. From there, logistics of planning, production, and operation are examined in detail, with a summary of general information about the special observatory included. Author
