Abstract:

The report describes development and construction of an engineering-model large-screen multicolor projector. It is designed to use a reflective photoplastic film which can be heat developed and projected immediately after recording. Recording of characters and symbols at a rate of 1000 per second by a cathode ray tube suitable for such single-frame color projection had been demonstrated in an earlier phase of development work. Limitations imposed by available optics as well as limitations to film deformation size of signals with respect to background prevented the model from meeting goals of brightness and contrast. Redirected effort has shown how a significant improvement can be made in the projector by curving the film. The result, in combination with optics designed for the application, is shown by analysis to be capable of meeting original goals, except for contrast, and of being much simpler than earlier designs.
