Studies of Oil Retention Boom Hydrodynamics

reportActive / Technical Report | Accession Number: AD0719294 | Open PDF

Abstract:

Results of an experimental investigation of oil containment hydrodynamics are presented with theoretical analyses to help explain the experimental findings. Two-dimensional model tests were performed using several petroleum products including diesel fuel and motor oil. Test variables in addition to oil properties were current, interfacial tension, gravity waves, slick volume, containment boom geometry, and boom depth. Also studied were three-dimensional effects and the efficiency of using absorbent additives and multiple boom configurations as containment aids.
