Abstract:

Attempts to grow single crystals of zircon ZrSiO4 by molten salt and hydrothermal techniques are described. Well developed crystals with 110 and 111 faces were grown up to 4 mm in size from a lithium tungstate melt. The crystal were colored pale to dark brown due to absorption of iron impurities along preferred crystallographic planes. A technique was developed for sintering high purity ZrO2 and SiO2 to yield pellets suitable for use as hydrothermal nutrient. High quality hydrothermal zircon growth was achieved on 1 x 12 inch 110 faces of natural zircon seed crystals. Experiments were performed in a one-inch platinum system at 500C and 29,000 psi using 3M KF as mineralizer. Author
