Abstract:

A study of heavy minerals on the California Coast was made at CERC. Beach samples were supplemented by samples from offshore and the rivers. Heavy minerals in the 63-125 micron fraction of the samples were identified by optical techniques. Five provinces were identified a north Hornblende, a north Augite, an Epidote, a south Augite and a south Hornblende. Analyses gave some indication of net littoral transport, but heavy minerals are not definitive indicators of littoral drift from Point Conception to Ventura. Author
