Abstract:

The document contains lists of word associations made by grade-school-aged children to content and function words primarily of CVC form. The CVC form was chosen because of the extensive use of CVCs in studies of verbal learning and to assure the homogeneity of number of letters and syllables and also of letter structure desirable in stimuli for studies of verbal behavior and verbal learning. Also, associations to CVCs were of interest in relation to values obtained in various calibrations of their meaningfulness. The CVCs included verbs, adjectives, nouns, and some function words. Some function words and quantifiers not of CVC structure were also included. Since words are necessary for the construction of sentences and of quantifier-noun compounds in studies concerned with the learning of connected discourse and with effects of verbal context on associations and learning.
