Abstract:

The first part of the article contains a physical picture of the thermocline formation in the upper layer of the sea depending on the factors determining heat supply and factors causing the redistribution of heat energy. Some papers devoted to different aspects of the theory of the vertical distribution of temperature in the upper layer of the sea are discussed in the second part of the article. Serious consideration is given to the investigations interpreting the question from the standpoint of the drift current theory. The Kitaygorodskiy wave mixing hypothesis is discussed. The effects of vertical movements on the temperature field formation is analyzed. A method of calculating the non-stationary distribution of temperature using the heat transfer equation is discussed. The article shows the ways for an empricial test of the hypothesis discussed. The need for special observations aimed at obtaining the corresponding experimental data is emphasized. Author
