Abstract:

Processes of limestone formation have largely been investigated by studying Holocene carbonate sediments. Limestones result when the processes of sediment supply, transportation, and chemical alteration interact to create sediments or sedimentary rocks with more than 50 per cent calcium carbonate. The same processes, occurring at different rates, can reduce the calcium carbonate content of marine sediments and prevent limestone formation. Therefore, the study of these processes in provinces of Holocene carbonate-poor sediments is equally important to the understanding of limestone formation. Author
