The Lagrangian functional Gphi the integral of 12phi-del squared1phi -14phi to the 4th powerdr is shown to be an upper bound for Gphi sub 0, where phi sub 0 is the ground-state eigen-function of -del squaredphi phi - phi cubed 0, provided that Gphi is stationary with respect to amplitude or scale variations in phi.
