DEVELOPMENT OF AN ARCTIC SURVIVAL SHELTER.
Abstract:
The investigation has demonstrated the possibility of providing aircrews with individual arctic shelters compatible with ejection limits on weight and space. Experimental work was based on use of insulated fabric shelters to trap heat radiated from the comparatively warm earth. The metabolic heat from human occupants further raises inside temperatures to as much as 60C above ambient. Shelters with weights in the 8 to 9 pound range with packaged volumes of 800 cubic inches have been developed. Shelters are erected by lightweight inflatable frames in less than two minutes. Author
