Abstract:

A detailed interpretation is presented of the measured ultraviolet absorption and emission spectra of the helium molecule. A potential-energy curve is derived for the A singlet Sigmau state that has a potential barrier of height 0.049 eV at a separation of 3.1 A and a potential well of depth 2.50 eV at a separation of 1.04 A. It is argued that the emission spectrum is due primarily to quasi-bound resonating vibrational states. Quantitative values for the absorption coefficient of colliding helium atoms are given. Some calculations on the effect of shape resonances in the photodissociation of H2 are described. An investigation of the effects of centrifugal distortion on discrete transition probabilities in the Lyman system of H2 is reported. Author
