THE DISTRIBUTION OF RIBBON SEAL (HISTRIOPHOCA FASCIATA) IN THE BERING SEA (Raspredelenie Krylatki v Beringovom More),
Abstract:
The distribution of ribbon seals in the Bering Sea, which was investigated by the Magadan Branch of TINRO and by several commercial vessels, is analyzed. A close connection between the distribution of the seals and the distribution of ice is evident. The effect of ice is especially pronounced in the position of the southern habitat boundaries during summer and winter. The southern boundary is also dependent upon the ice conditions in any given year. The general rule is that the denser the concentration of ice, the denser the harems of seals occupying the ice. Data on the distribution and habitat of ribbon seals during summer are still lacking. The seals either live scattered over the entire sea or travel northward with the ice edge. Author
