SLOPE DISTRIBUTIONS OF THE EAST PACIFIC RISE CREST,

Abstract:

Measurements made with near-bottom instruments show that bottom slopes at the East Pacific Rise crest are generally steeper across the strike of the elongate abyssal hills that parallel the trend of the rise than along the strike of the hills. Rise crest slopes are generally steeper than rise flank slopes regardless of direction. The ponding of acoustically transparent sediment at the rise crest has considerably lowered volcanic basement slopes in this area. Seventy percent of a near-bottom profile made across strike at the rise crest must be approximated to an accuracy of plus or minus 2 m by straight line segments with horizontal extents of less than 100 m.
