THE GAS FLOW IN GAS-OPERATED WEAPONS
Abstract:
In gas-operated weapons, the time-varying pressure in the barrel is fed through a duct into a cylinder. The piston in the cylinder is displaced by the pressure and operates on a mechanism which extracts the spent cartridge and completes the next loading cycle. The theory presented here predicts the pressure history in the cylinder and the motion of the piston for a given pressure and temperature history in the barrel.
