Abstract:

A summary is given of research efforts which accomplished among other things the following Initiated nationwide and worldwide change of emergency artificial ventilation techniques from chest-pressure arm-lift to backward tilt of the head and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation helped define details of CPR techniques added new knowledge to resuscitation of near-drowning victims, use of plasma substitutes, treatment of exsanguination and cardiac arrest, pulmonary oxygen toxicity, artificial ventilation techniques, airway care of critically ill patients, study of critically ill patients, emergency medical transportation and teachability of life support techniques catalyzed teaching material in CPR, emergency care and intensive care influenced the development of higher standards and goals in critical care medicine through national and international symposia and committees and implementation through local pilot projects. A list of the 157 publications generated by the work is included.
