THE CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF LIQUID METAL EMBRITTLEMENT.

Abstract:

A study was made of the influence of various liquid metals and solutions on the fracture behavior of aluminum, cadmium, silver, brass and silver-gold alloys. The principal experimental variables were composition and grain size of the solid, composition of the liquid metal phase, temperature and rate of loading. The results indicate that, by using appropriate values of these variables, it is possible to control either enhance or inhibit embrittlement over fairly wide ranges. Author
