Abstract:

The reactivity of dioxygen difluoride O2F2 with ClF3, SbF5, BF3, SnF4, MoF6, WF6, and SiF4 has been studied. Dioxygen difluoride was prepared by passing a mixture of fluorine and oxygen through an electric glow discharge in the apparatus shown. The pure O2F2 was an orange solid melting at 109.7 degrees K, thermally unstable and decomposing to oxygen and fluorine in the neighborhood of the boiling point 216K. The reaction of O2F2 was studied in the 90-200K range. It was found that one of the reaction products is ClF5. The final step of the hydrolysis is evidently more complicated and requires further study. The reaction of O2F2 with SnF4 forms O2SnF6. The reaction with WF6 and MoF6 results in products with the approximate compositions O2WF7. Author
