AEOLIAN TONES ASSOCIATED WITH RESONANT VIBRATION.
Abstract:
Measurements of oscillating lift coefficient, spanwise correlation length, Strouhal number, and radiated sound intensity were made on the same cylinder under the same test conditions over a Reynolds number range of 4000 to 6450. These measurements verified that the Curle theory of dipole radiation as expressed by Phillips for the Aeolian tone holds for a cylinder resonantly excited by a periodic wake in air. For small amplitude vibration, the increase of oscillating lift coefficient with Reynolds number accounts for the increase of sound intensity. Author
