METABOLIC EFFECTS OF BLOOD TRANSFUSION.
Abstract:
The metabolic effects of massive blood transfusion have been studied. The effects of citrate-induced hypocalcemia, elevated potassium concentrations, and metabolic acidosis have been examined individually and in combination in the experimental dog and in the isolated guinea pig atrium. Special attention has been given to the role of adrenergic mechanisms in circulatory homeostasis during massive transfusion. Chemical, electrocardiographic, and hemodynamic methods have been developed to allow on-line investigation of the special risks and ultimate routine monitoring of the circulation during massive transfusion.
