INVESTIGATION OF THE REASON FOR THE CHANGE IN STABILITY OF CERTAIN PALLADIUM-RHODIUM ALLOYS UPON THEIR INTERACTION WITH HYDROGEN,

Abstract:

It is shown by x-ray analysis that deformation of the alloys Pd-1 vol. Rh, and 80 vol. Pd-19 vol. Ag-1 vol. Rh. resulting from repeated heating and cooling in an atmosphere of hydrogen is connected with an alpha-beta phase transition. In alloys of Pd with 10 vol. Rh, alpha-beta phase transitions are absent. This explains their high stability in an atmosphere of hydrogen, their permeability to hydrogen being close to that of pure palladium. The addition to the binary alloy Pd-20 vol. Ag of 1 of Rh appreciably increases the stability of the alloy on interaction with hydrogen. Author
