THICKNESS OF PERMAFROST BEDS AS AN INDEX OF TECTONIC STRUCTURE OF THE REGION (ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE NORTHERN PART OF WEST SIBERIA),

From studies of permafrost under various West Siberian tectonic conditions it is shown that in regions where the basement is at shallow depths the thickness of permafrost beds, other conditions being equal, is always less than in regions where the basement lies at greater depths. The permafrost thickness may show an especially sharp decrease over anticlinal uplifts of the higher orders of size. This phenomenon, in the authors opinion, is common to the whole territory of the West Siberian Plain. It is proposed that the distribution of permafrost thicknesses be used for the study of tectonism. Author
