Abstract:

The feasibility of fully fueled, no maintenance, alkaline methanol-oxygen cells has been investigated for low power, long life use. Silver-palladium oxide carbon anode and platinized carbon cathode structures are utilized in cell schemes using anion exchange membranes and electrically biased catalyzed nickel grids. This cell design has been incorporated into practical battery configurations and has shown to be an effective one for improved performance and life. In completely sealed cells wherein high concentrations of methanol are dissolved in the KOH electrolyte, the interaction of methanol at platinized carbon cathode structures is virtually eliminated with this improved design.
