THE KLYSTRON,

Abstract:

A discussion is given of the functions and operational principles of klystrons, which are classified into direct beam type two-cavity or multicavity and reflex type single cavity. Direct beam klystrons are used for oscillation, amplification, and frequency multiplication in the 10,000-Mc range to produce a pulse power output reaching tens of Mw and a power amplification near the million-fold mark. Klystrons cannot be used in receivers to amplify weak signals because of high inherent noise levels. Reflex klystrons are used only as oscillators, for example local oscillators in superheterodyne receivers or microwave signal generators in electronic equipment. Reflex klystron oscillators operate at a frequency up to 90,000 Mc. Internal and external resonant cavities are designed to meet specific tuning requirements. Author
