Abstract:

On 18 October 1967 the VENUS 4 automatic station successfully penetrated the Venutian atmosphere, carried out the first measurements of its physical and chemical properties, and descended smoothly to the surface of the planet. VENUS 4 was launched 12 June 1967. Findings regarding the Venutian atmosphere were 1 No magnetic field 2 Concentration of charged particles in the investigated region of the upper atmosphere did not exceed 1,000 particles per cubic centimeter 3 Presence of neutral hydrogen 4 Measured data on the temperature, pressure, and chemical composition 5 Carbon dioxide constitutes the basic component and 6 High pressure, density, and temperature levels.
