SELF-IGNITION AND THE INDUCTION PERIOD OF A DROP OF LIQUID FUEL,
Abstract:
The ignition of hexane, n-octane, and cetane droplets 0.0014-0.002 m in diameter was studied by suspending the droplets from a quartz filament in a vertical tube through which preheated air was passed at velocities of 1.3-4.9 msec. The ignition process was studied by motion picture photography and induction time vs air temperature plots were obtained. A theoretical analysis yielded a formula for the dimensionless induction time. It is concluded that the studied fuels cannot ignite at the wet bulb temperature but they always ignite at a lower temperature. The induction time changes with the temperature of the medium faster than the temperature gradient across the droplet-medium interphase. Author
