SURFACE SCATTERING AND OTHER SURFACE PHENOMENA.
Abstract:
This Grant permitted the initiation of a theoretical solid state physics group in the University of Virginia, which now consists of about seven faculty members. The program of Surface Physics which it was supposed to develop has really just started, but in a very promising way. Substantial and important contributions have been made to the theories of magnetic and superconducting properties of solids resonance elastic and inelastic scattering of light atoms from solid surfaces and thermodynamics of surfaces. Work has progressed also on two other topics, although no substantial success has been achieved yet - namely, establishment of a bridge between quantum-mechanical theories of scattering of light gases from solid surfaces and the corresponding classical-mechanical theories for heavy gases and, motion of defects in crystal lattices.
