TITANIUM IN AEROSPACE STRUCTURES: A CASE STUDY OF THE INTERACTION BETWEEN MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION,
Abstract:
Material development and structural application of titanium are reviewed for the purpose of making the accumulated experience available for the development of future advanced materials. Two types of interaction are considered materials development and structural application as well as materials selection and structural application. The process of selecting a material for structural application is investigated from the viewpoint of engineering design. It is shown that titanium provides a valuable case study because it is the first material developed on a large scale for the complex conditions of high-performance aircraft. Author
