KINETICS OF RESTORING LEAD OXIDE WITH CARBON MONOXIDE,

Abstract:

The kinetics of restoring lead oxide in the rhombic yellow modification by carbon monoxide in the temperature interval 400--800C and a pressure of 25--300 mm Hg was studied. It is shown that the process of restoration begins with maximum speed and proceeds in accordance with a first order equation. No phenomena of autocatalysm are detected. The rate of the process increases with an increase in temperature and with an increase in the carbon monoxide pressure. Crystalline modifications of lead oxide differ in their reaction capability. Restoration of tetragonal lead oxide proceeds at a much greater rate and begins at a lower temperature than in the case of the rhombic modification of lead oxide. Under the conditions prevailing with lead shaft smelting, the restoration of structurally free lead oxide must terminate in the upper zone of restoration.
