Abstract:

The purpose of the work on this contract is to investigate the interaction of electromagnetic waves and charge carriers in vacuum and solids. The construction of a crossed-field amplifier which will incorporate the results of our noise studies is in progress. Evaluation of the interaction impedance of the flattened helix from measurements of perturbations of the resonant frequency of a shorting-plane cavity is being made. The paraxial crossed-field gun design method is being carried on to obtain designs for magnetically shielded guns. We are looking at ways of reaching the optimum compromise between desirable potentials and convergence. An experimental and theoretical evaluation of the crossed-field acoustic-wave amplifier is being conducted. In this quarter a computer program was developed to evaluate the maximum gain per unit length obtainable as a function of frequency with a limitation set on allowable power dissipation per unit volume. Electromagnetic and space-charge waves in semiconductors are being studied in order to determine if there are microwave device applications.
