Abstract:

Polypropylene oxide was prepared using an aluminum isopropoxide-zinc chloride catalyst system at a temperature of 70-80C for seven days. The isotactic portion was separated from the atactic, using acetone at low temperatures. The isotactic material, which was optically inactive, was fractionated in an isopropanol-water mixture at 70C. The polymer degraded in air and various polar solvents. However, nonpolar solvents did not cause degrading, and therefore could be used for the various determinations. The viscosity measurements were run in benzene at 25C, the osmotic pressure measurements in toluene at 25C, the vapor pressure osmometry measurements in toluene at 37C, and the gel permeation chromatography measurements in tetrahydrofuran at 25C.
