A METHOD OF BLOCKING THE VAGUS NERVE IN THE CONSCIOUS DOG.

To block the parasymphathetic control of the heart in a conscious animal, a method should be used that will not affect other organs or systems. Bilateral vagotomy, anticholinergic drugs, and cold blockade have been used. These methods, while effective, have certain factors unacceptable for repeated usage in conscious animals. A method was developed, using a cold block, whereby repeated studies can be made on the same conscious animal. A coil covered with an insulator is surgically implanted around the vagus nerve. A coolant is pumped through this coil to block the impulse traffic, thereby temporarily eliminating the parasympathetic control of the heart. Author
