PROGRESS TOWARD LONG-LIFE BEARINGS.
Abstract:
The need for longer lasting, more reliable ball bearings in Navy applications led to investigations of various means of improved lubrication. Included are studies of new methods of bearing lubrication as well as causes of and modes of lubricant loss. Experiments with oil-impregnated porous nylon ball bearing retainers for use in typical Navy machinery indicate their feasibility in achieving long bearing life. Experiments to determine the cause of a pressure gradient existing across a shielded bearing in an electric motor revealed the internal motor-cooling fan as one cause, and considerable air flow as a result of the pressure gradient.
