Abstract:

This paper derives by a new method an equation due to Macdonald for determining the zeros of the associated Legendre functions of order m and non-integral degree n when the argument is close to -1. A closed form solution is obtained for the values of Q subscript n superscript m mu and Q subscript n superscript -m mu for mu close to 1. Certain observations are made concerning errors in a recently published article.
