Abstract:

One of the possible methods for determining the changes in the chemical potentials and activity coefficients called the third component method was examined. The method consists in calculation of the above quantities from the data on the solubility of the binary solid solutions in a liquid solvent and on the changes in the chemical potential of the latter. With the aid of the proposed method changes in the chemical potentials and activity coefficients of the binary solid solution K2SO4 - NH42SO4 were calculated. The data required for the calculation were obtained from a study of the compositions of the co-existing phases and of the water vapor pressure over the saturated solution in the system K2SO4 - NH42SO4 - H2O at 25C.
