Abstract:

An investigation was made of the micromechanical behavior of a fiber reinforced composite under compressive, tensile, shear, and bending loads, along with repeated load cyclings. The results of these studies are published in Technical Reports AFML-TR-65-237 and AFML-TR-66-177. This work also included a general literature survey on micromechanics, which was published as AFML-TR-65-12. The objective of the third year of this program was to experimentally investigate the elastic constants and strength under tensile, compressive, shear, and bending loads for fiber reinforced composites having unidirectional and multidirectional layups, then to compare the experimental data with the existing methods for analytical predictions. The degree of correlation between analysis and experiment was determined.
