Abstract:

Several refractory and metallic media were tested for effectiveness in removing aluminum oxide from molten aluminum casting alloys. A technique was used by which a metal sample could be melted, filtered, and cast entirely in a nitrogen atmosphere. Eleven filter materials in granular form were evaluated for two commercial alloys, 195 and 356. The aluminum oxide content of each alloy was determined before and after filtering by chemical analysis, using a procedure previously developed. Single filter packs of carborundum, porous graphite, or nonporous graphite decreased the oxide content of 195 alloy magnesite, alundum, mullite, or porous graphite were most effective for alloy 356.
