Abstract:

The study was directed toward the goals of a developing measures of military map-reading performance and b utilizing those measures to evaluate alternative photomaps and photomap design variables. Photomaps were developed from uncontrolled photomosaics in terms of five design variables a production techniques, b levels of contour density, c road and river enhancement, d color of background image, and e level of annotation density. The performance of over 600 military subjects was evaluated in terms of three field tasks and four Command-Post measures. Testing was conducted at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, and Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Major results included identification of superior production techniques and method of road and river enhancement. Three superior photomaps were identified consisting of color enhanced black and white Pictotone, chromatic Pictotone and chromatic Pictochrome maps. Performance on the two Pictotone products was comparable to that obtained on standard military line maps. Author
